Why are Psychology and Neuroscience Important to Tutoring?
Most tutors tend to focus only on the externals of learning or what we call content. This refers to the content that is in the textbook or what teachers usually cover in the classroom. This is an important aspect of tutoring and learning, but, alone, it is incomplete. At NeuroMethod Tutoring, we have an additional focus on the internal process of learning. This refers to the mental process that goes on in students’ minds while they are writing an essay, taking a test, reading or doing homework. Without tutoring on the internal process of learning, students will likely have trouble gaining independence from their tutor. Most tutors, lacking an education in psychology, are not able to address students’ internal process of learning or other vital areas, such as motivation, critical thinking, executive functioning and concentration, which are essential for their short-term and long-term success. In addition, since our tutors are steeped in psychology and therapeutic techniques, we are able to effectively address psychological and emotional blocks to learning.
